Photographers spend a great deal of time chasing equipment. Bigger lights, more power, larger modifiers, more batteries, more stands. Much of it eventually stays home.
The Godox AD200 is one of the rare pieces of equipment that solved more problems than it created.
I originally wanted a flash that was powerful enough for outdoor portraits, flexible enough for indoor work, and small enough that I would actually bring it with me. The AD200 delivered all three.
At roughly the size of a telephoto lens, it produces substantially more power than a traditional speedlight while remaining small enough to fit comfortably in a camera bag. The interchangeable flash heads provide additional flexibility, allowing it to function as either a traditional flash or a bare bulb light source.
What I appreciate most about the AD200 is not the power. It is the portability.
When photographing environmental portraits, community events, or outdoor sessions, I can carry an entire lighting kit consisting of:
- One AD200
- Light stand
- Small modifier
- Trigger
- Spare battery
That entire kit weighs less than some monolights.
Battery life has also been excellent. One battery is often enough for an entire portrait session, which eliminates the need for extension cords or power packs.
